Art Literacy

Art Literacy is a long-standing art enrichment program in the Beaverton School District, made possible by a crew of dedicated parent and community volunteers and the financial support of our Parent Teacher Club.

Throughout the year, our volunteers introduce all students at William Walker to six diverse artists and their unique techniques. Then students make their own art production in that style.

Louise Nevelson's found object sculptures, Van Gogh's expressive brushstrokes, the intricate beading of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde — over their years at William Walker, students build a foundation in looking at and talking about art, and they experience a variety of materials they may not otherwise encounter.

What your support covers

• Supplies like paint, brushes, paper, sculpting materials, oil pastels, and drawing pencils for use across 25 classrooms
• Materials for sample projects to demonstrate techniques with students
• Copies of curriculum materials for volunteers to use in lesson presentations

No art or teaching experience is needed to volunteer — all training, lesson plans, and materials are provided. And every dollar goes straight into supplies to bring hands-on learning to every one of our students.
